Hidden Gems - Fighting Games

Waku Waku 7
Released - 1996 for arcade

Despite only having 7 playable characters, Waku Waku 7 is such a unique fighting game that stands apart from others. The colourful art style and crazy moves take up the entire screen, with game machanics that set this apart from others such as screen zooming and hitting opponents whilst they are down. One of the characters you come up against is literally a punching bag with a face. Definitely the most crazy of all the fighters I've ever played.

Ninja Masters
Released - 1996 for arcade

Another 90's beat em up here in Ninja Masters, and one that's relatively unheard of. The game uses weapons and plays similar to Street fighter. It's also one of the best 2D fighters you'll play, so you should definitely check this one out. Most of the characters are very generic looking but in terms of a playability this ninja brawler is top notch.

Power Stone 2
Released - 2000 for Dreamcast

One of the most loved arena fighters was the Power Stone series on Dreamcast, and a game that really needs a port or remaster. The first Power Stone was great but the sequel was bigger and added 4 player battles. The gameplay is smooth and responsive,  and the characters are all fun to use. Each arena is scattered with weapons like hammers and rocket launchers, making every match chaotic.

Power Instinct 2
Released - 1994 Arcade, PlayStation

Probably the most unusual bunch of character designs ever to grace a fighting game, and that includes Waku Waku 7, however the gameplay is what makes this game so great. Huge super moves that fill the screen and 2 on 2 combat, Power Instinct 2 is another unknown classic.

Gang Beasts
Released - 2014 on various platforms

Gang Beasts is a game best enjoyed with friends in local multiplayer. Solo doesn't really offer much besides online, but 4 player couch madness is where the fun is. Your characters are clumsy clay people who fall over and stumble from any push or hit. The idea is to knock your opponents off the edge or into a pit. You can headbutt and dropkick and move about to evade attacks, it's gauranteed to cause both laughter and arguments. Each match is unpredictable and luck can prove the decider between winning and losing. Some great stages include a blimp, train station and a lighthouse.
