Flash Reviews - Crash Team Racing Nitro Fuelled
Fun while it lasted
When Activision announced a Crash Team Racing reboot, I was so excited to play one of my childhood favourite games again on PS4. The game also released on Xbox and Switch. The game didn't disappoint and the first thing I did when I downloaded the game was dive into the single player adventure mode. Here is where you can unlock relics, crystals and other challenges such as the CTR tokens and hidden extras. Back on the original PlayStation I finished the game with 100% in adventure mode and I wanted to replicate that on modern day consoles. After finishing the single player I went online, where it's noticeably harder against a lot of good players who know all the shortcuts and secrets.
For the first year at least the game was supported well with content, and Activision released Grand Prix 'seasons', where upon you can unlock content much like a season pass and playing online will progress you through it. There were around five Grand Prixs altogether and after around a year they stopped supporting the game with any features at all.
I managed to unlock most of the goodies on offer and unlocked every character in the game with various outfits/ karts. For some reason I have since been locked out from accessing these characters and the game has basically been reset for me, which is very frustrating after all the work and time I put into it.
Despite the remaster looking beautiful on today's consoles and a significant upgrade from the old PS1 title, it just doesn't feel as good as the old version did. Add to that the fact that you can still purchase Crash Team Racing on PS1 via the PlayStation Store on PS3, and my advice would be to just get the old game. Especially now as the Grand Prix modes have all ended, the original at only £3.99 is a steal.
